Year-Round Carnival Activities in Saxony-Anhalt Keep Traditions Alive

Carnival enthusiasts in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, maintain a vibrant calendar of year-round events that celebrates the region's rich cultural heritage and festive spirit. According to Dirk Vater, president of the Carnival State Association of Saxony-Anhalt, interviewed by the German Press Agency, the annual schedule includes dance sports championships, men's ballet competitions, and various carnivalistic championships.

The celebrations extend beyond the winter months between November 11th and Ash Wednesday. During summer, numerous clubs host festivals where carnival participants actively participate. In addition, these enthusiasts can be hired for private events, offering show dances to entertain guests. Vater emphasized the association's intention to expand children's dance workshops, particularly in rural areas, where carnival clubs often serve as the only cultural ambassadors.

A unique offering from the state association is the "Carnival Makes Holidays" children's holiday camp, scheduled for June 29th to July 5th, 2025, at the youth hostel in Nebra. Featuring a circus program, this camp accommodates 56 children for a week. Originally initiated to offer an alternative for youngsters during the summer, the camp has gained popularity in recent years.

For young people, there's a youth camp at the end of August for a long weekend, offering activities like canoeing, hiking, and disco nights. This event has traditionally been celebrated for six consecutive years.

Another set of fixed dates in the carnival enthusiasts' calendar consists of workshop meetings, including button, singing, and club workshops. On average, 25 button speakers attend personalized training sessions led by practitioners. About 45 singers gather yearly for further training in vocal techniques. In club workshops, topics range from digital media to tax law and aim to equip the clubs with essential resources.

As of November 2024, Vater has been serving as the association's president for 14 years, having been re-elected for another term. Currently, 185 clubs are organized under the state association. The enriching and cultural events organized by these clubs foster a sense of community and help preserve the region's Carnival traditions.

While not all aspects of Carnival take place within the winter months, the importance of upholding traditions remains prevalent throughout the year. By attending workshops, participating in festivals, and engaging in educational programs, new generations can continue to delight in the region's rich Carnival culture year-round.
