War-affected Ukrainians to take vacations in Portugal
In the heart of Europe, a humanitarian effort is underway to offer a glimmer of hope and respite to 16 Ukrainian children who have lost their parents in the ongoing war against Russia. This initiative, named "Children of Heroes – Warmed by Sun and Love," was launched in 2025 by the Association of Ukrainians in Portugal, the Association of Ukrainian Women in Portugal, and the Benfica Parish Council, with the logistical and financial support of the software company Arquiconsult [1][2].
The project's primary objective is to provide these families with a much-needed break from the war-torn environment. The families, consisting of the children, their mothers (widows of Ukrainian soldiers), and a volunteer doctor, will spend 10 unforgettable days in Portugal, immersed in a variety of leisure activities and cultural visits [1][2].
The itinerary for this heartwarming holiday includes visits to the beautiful beaches of Portugal, the Lisbon Oceanarium, the Pavilhão do Conhecimento, Badoca Safari Park, the Sanctuary of Fátima, and the Mira D'Aire Caves. The children will also have leisure moments in the vibrant city of Lisbon [1][2].
This is the first year of the "Children of Heroes – Warmed by Sun and Love" project, but the organizers aim to make it an annual event, providing relief to different Ukrainian families affected by the war each year [1][2]. The project is being supported by the Association of Ukrainians in Portugal, the Association of Ukrainian Women in Portugal, the Benfica Parish Council, and Arquiconsult.
The war in Ukraine began in February 2022 due to Russia's invasion, leaving countless families devastated and in need of support. This initiative serves as a beacon of hope, offering these children and their families opportunities for relaxation and enjoyment during their stay in Portugal.
