Their love affair with Albania began after months of traveling through Central and South America, Africa, Europe, Southeast, and East Asia. Despite visiting numerous destinations, the couple fell head over heels for Albania's charm and charm.

Alicia: Our travels have led us to numerous countries, yet Albania remains our ultimate favorite. It's a relatively unspoiled paradise compared to other European hotspots like Barcelona, Paris, London, Rome, and Prague. The locals were incredibly welcoming, treating us like family.
However, Albania is not without imperfections. After the transition from communism in the '90s, the country is still developing. You can still find remnants of old bunkers in cities, and the quake near the capital Tirana in 2019 destroyed many buildings, leading to ongoing construction.
Still, Albania's quirks make it even more special - each visit feels like discovering a new place.
Embracing Albania's Breathtaking Nature
Alicia: Albania is about the size of Portugal and bordered by Italy, Greece, and Montenegro. It's an ideal destination for exploring in just one or two weeks. With its mild Mediterranean climate, stunning landscapes include the Albanian Riviera and Theth National Park.
Albania boasts beautiful mountain ranges, including the Albanian Alps, the Korab Range, and Tomorr Mountain, perfect for hiking. Despite having no ski resorts, the mountains are often snow-covered, creating a winter wonderland.
The architecture in Albania is remarkably diverse. The City of Berat preserves Ottoman-style white stone houses, dark tile roofs, and wooden windows dating back nearly 2,000 years. Meanwhile, modern influences can be spotted in Tirana's vibrant streets.
Living the Dream: Affordability Meets Quality of Life
Alicia: We decided to make the move to Tirana in February 2023. Living in a brand-new, one-bedroom apartment with amenities set us back only 450 euros per month. Utilities, such as internet, water, and electricity, add just 100 euros to that cost.
For reference, our rent in San Diego before our travels was $1,100, for a smaller apartment and a substantial commute.
Not only did moving to Albania save us a significant sum, but it also provided the perfect setting for our business, The Passport Couple.
Nathan: Local Albanian cuisine is both tasty and affordable. A traditional meal can cost as little as 45 euros, and it includes five or six dishes to share.
Public transportation in Tirana also makes getting around a breeze. Rides cost just 40 cents, and shuttle buses to neighboring cities are reasonably priced.
Embracing a New Lifestyle: Adapting to Albania
Alicia: Our neighborhood is walkable, with a grocery store, bakery, fruit stand, and even an English bookstore all within reach. Despite Albania lacking a prominent nightlife, gathering spaces are abundant, such as the shared courtyards of apartment complexes known as "third spaces."
Locals value evening social hours, known as "xhiro," where families and friends gather to chat, play, and enjoy the camaraderie.
Living in Albania brings its challenges, such as having to shop at multiple places for everyday needs. However, the advantages far outweigh any inconveniences.

Despite Albania presenting some logistical difficulties like inconveniences in shopping and delivery services, the country's affordable lifestyle, stunning natural beauty, and cultural experiences make it an attractive alternative for those looking for a change.
For those considering a move to Albania, it's essential to research the country and weigh the pros and cons before making a decision. But for Alicia and Nathan, their love for this hidden gem knows no bounds, and they continue to cherish every moment of their new life in Albania.
Alicia: What about the fashion scene in Albania?Nathan: There's a growing fashion-and-beauty industry, with local designers drawing inspiration from the country's traditional costumes and contemporary tastes.
Alicia: How about pets and relationships?Nathan: Pets are part of many Albanian households, and it's easy to find pet shops and vets in most cities. As for relationships, Albania has a rich dating culture, with people meeting through mutual friends, social gatherings, and even online dating.
Alicia: Travel and exploring new destinations have always been a part of our lifestyle. How do cars fit into the picture in Albania?Nathan: Car ownership can be affordable, with new cars starting at around 6,000 euros. However, the roads and traffic in Tirana can be chaotic, so some prefer to use the well-connected public transportation system instead.
Alicia: Finally, what about the food-and-drink scene and relaxing at home?Nathan: Food-and-drink experiences in Albania are an integral part of the local culture, with a variety of traditional dishes like "fasule" (white bean stew), "tave kosi" (lamb casserole with yogurt sauce), and "qofte" (meatballs) waiting to be savored. Additionally, home-and-garden stores offer quality furniture and decorative items at reasonable prices, making it easy to create a comfortable living space.
