Transcontinental Journey: Egypt to South Africa (Cairo to Cape Town)

Florence Ryan, a 2019 Law graduate from Durham University, is currently cycling an impressive 13,000km from Cairo to Cape Town. This ambitious journey, known as Project Africa, is a testament to her spirit of adventure and her desire to explore the diverse landscapes and cultures of Africa1.

The idea for this epic cycling adventure came from a friend she met through her creative community. The journey is not just a physical challenge, but also a means for Florence to document her experiences for her YouTube and social media followers, offering a unique insight into African cultures[1].

Florence's documentary style videos, complete with photo maps, indicate a deliberate route and purpose to her journey. While the exact motivation for starting the trip is not detailed, such long-distance cycling adventures often begin as a personal challenge, a desire for in-depth travel experience, or to raise awareness for a cause[1].

During her journey, Florence has already traveled through Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, and is currently taking a break in Uganda. She climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro as a break from her cycling journey[1].

Before embarking on Project Africa, Florence had lived in various countries including Germany, India, Saudi Arabia, and Senegal. She discovered other creative professionals and built a creative community during her time in these places. Florence went freelance as a video producer in 2020, focusing on online videos for a growing client base2.

Florence's YouTube channel, which she started during her time at Durham University, documents her Project Africa adventure. She supports herself through her own YouTube videos and Patreon supporters. Her videos have inspired others to attend Durham University3.

Florence started making videos since she was about 12 years old. She developed her video techniques and skillset during the pandemic, deciding to pursue a career in video producing during lockdowns in 2020. Her sports background, having participated in sports at college and university level while at Durham, has likely contributed to her physical endurance during her cycling journey4.

Florence's mother is Indian, and her father is British-French. She is aiming to reach Cape Town by April 20245.

Florence is looking to connect with members of the Durham University alumni and supporter community based in Africa. Her journey is not just a personal adventure, but also an opportunity to engage with the African community and share her experiences with others1.
