Ascension Day Next Weekend Expected to Cause Traffic Congestion in Baden-Württemberg - ADAC Tips for Avoiding Gridlock

With Ascension Day approaching on Thursday, the Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club (ADAC) urges motorists in Baden-Württemberg to anticipate heavy traffic, particularly on the roads leading to Karlsruhe, and offers suggestions to steer clear of potential gridlock.

According to Holger Bach, head of the ADAC's traffic and environment department, the commute on Wednesday between 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. is likely to witness the most significant traffic, as commuters and vacationers converge. In 2024, the day preceding Ascension Day was one of the year's most congested days.

Particularly troublesome are construction zones, which increase the risk of bottlenecks during accidents or high traffic volumes. Here are some of the current construction sites with potential traffic jams:

  • A5 Darmstadt-Heidelberg, both directions between Hemsbach and Hirschberg
  • A5 Basel to Karlsruhe, between Rastatt-Nord and Karlsruhe Süd
  • A6 Mannheim-Heilbronn, both directions between Kreuz Walldorf and Wiesloch/Rauenberg
  • A7 Würzburg-Ulm, both directions between Feuchtwangen-West and Rastplatz Mühlbruck
  • A8 Stuttgart-Karlsruhe, both directions between Pforzheim-Süd and Pforzheim-Nord
  • A8/A81 at the Leonberg triangle
  • A81 Singen-Stuttgart, both directions between Oberndorf am Neckar and Empfingen

To minimize traffic jams, the ADAC advises drivers to start their short vacations in the evening or on Thursday itself to reach their destinations faster. On Friday and Saturday, traffic is expected to be much less congested on Baden-Württemberg's motorways. Sunday will experience more congestion compared to a typical Sunday, but it will still be less than on Wednesday, as commuters will not be on the roads.

Drivers should also avoid exiting the motorway in the event of a traffic jam, as detouring on country roads may not provide additional advantages. Roads are often congested as well, and it is only advisable to leave the motorway in the event of long traffic jams or a total closure.

This year, there may be increased border controls entering Germany, so short vacationers are encouraged to plan accordingly. Last year, the ADAC reported 239 traffic jams in Baden-Württemberg on the Wednesday before Ascension Day, resulting in a total length of 896 kilometers and a waiting time of 272 hours.

By following these tips and utilizing ADAC's updated information, drivers can likely minimize their time spent in Ascension Day weekend traffic on the roads leading to Karlsruhe.

For further advice, take advantage of ADAC's real-time traffic alerts, navigation systems with live traffic updates, and regionally broadcast traffic news. Consider traveling at non-peak hours, using local roads instead of major highways, or exploring alternative routes if needed. Lastly, consider using public transport or park-and-ride facilities and prepare your vehicle for potential delays to make your journey as smooth as possible.

  1. Given the upcoming Ascension Day and the predicted heavy traffic, particularly on roads leading to Karlsruhe, the ADAC urges everyone to consider the community policy on transport, aiming to reduce congestion and prolonged traffic delays.
  2. In light of increased border controls entering Germany, travelers embarking on short vacations should be mindful of their environmental impact, adopting a sustainable lifestyle that prioritizes efficient transit methods and environmental aid to ensure smooth travel during the Ascension Day weekend.
