Street revellers drench each other in water during the annual Songkran Festival in Luang Prabang, Laos.
Festive Spirit Fills Luang Prabang During Lao New Year
Stepping into April, Luang Prabang, Laos, comes alive with swirling colors and roaring cheers as the city celebrates the Lao New Year, or Songkran Festival, from the 14th to the 16th. The festivities are a vibrant blend of Buddhist customs, cultural traditions, and communal celebrations, offering a unique slice of Laotian heritage. (Photo: Xinhua)
Families flock to temples to partake in age-old rituals. Buddha statues are bathed with scented water, representing the purification and renewal needed for the upcoming year. Offerings of food and flowers are made to monks in search of blessings for the new year. (Photo: Xinhua)
Respect for elders is a deeply ingrained tradition. Younger family members take turns pouring scented water over their elders' hands, demonstrating gratitude and hoping for their continued good health. Shared meals, featuring dishes like larb and sticky rice, symbolize unity and prosperity. (Photo: Xinhua)
The festivities extend beyond the walls of the temples. A colorful parade, featuring the "Spring Goddess" and performers in traditional masks, snakes through the streets, bringing together locals and visitors. Spectators revel in the opportunity to splash water on the parade, exchanging blessings and goodwill. (Photo: Xinhua)
Devotees join hands to build sand stupas, small mounds at temples, often adorned with flags. This spiritual practice is seen as a way to earn merit and honor ancestors. (Photo: Xinhua)
The city's streets transform into a stage for playful water fights, a nod to traditional practices in neighboring Thailand, yet distinctly Laotian. Meanwhile, boat races and cultural performances enrich the atmosphere, particularly in heritage locations like Luang Prabang.
The Laotian government is committed to upholding these customs, striving to balance the exuberance of the celebrations with the solemn reverence for tradition. (Photo: Xinhua)
