San Francisco reveals psychedelic-themed public buses: Muni's latest design change in California

In the heart of San Francisco, the city's iconic public transit system, Muni, is rolling out a vibrant and colourful tribute to the Grateful Dead, a legendary band deeply rooted in the city's history and vibrant culture. Three new buses and a Muni Metro train, adorned with Summer of Love-inspired designs, are set to transport fans to the upcoming Dead & Company concerts at Golden Gate Park.

The "Psychedeli-Buses" and the "Trippy Train" are a visual feast, boasting colourful patterns, peace symbols, stars, flowers, and tie-dye designs. These eye-catching vehicles will be operating on the 7 Haight/Noriega, 5 Fulton lines, and the N-Judah route, providing a fun and festive mode of transport for concert-goers.

The buses and train, which will be in service from July 23, 2025, are more than just a nod to the Grateful Dead's legacy; they are also a way to enhance the public's experience with the city's transit system. In addition, San Francisco is offering expanded service on the N Judah, 5 Fulton, and 5R routes to cater to the increased demand for transportation during the concerts.

Muni designed these new wraps to boost brand awareness and make people feel better about their public transit system. The SFMTA has already sold thousands of Muni-themed jerseys, and the recent release of a tie-dye Muni T-shirt at the Muni merch store is expected to be a hit among fans.

The Grateful Dead's influence extends beyond the music scene. The Muni system and its 1970s "worm" logo have gained popularity, especially among young transit fans. The colourful buses, reminiscent of the Grateful Dead's psychedelic aesthetic, are a testament to this growing appreciation.

SFMTA director Julie Kirschbaum believes that the themed buses remind people that Muni has been connecting people to major San Francisco moments for generations. As the city gears up for the upcoming Dead & Company shows, these psychedelic buses and trains promise to add a touch of nostalgia and excitement to the city's transit system.
