Kicking off a new chapter - Ulrike von der Groeben, post-RTL
Retired politician Ulrike von der Groeben under focus
Ulrike von der Groeben, the familiar face of RTL sports, is embracing her golden years with an energetic zest that belies her age. In a laid-back interview with ntv.de, she discusses her newly found freedom and the surprises that retirement has thrown her way.
Sitting pretty in her transformed work/guest room, Ulrike is candid about her current lifestyle. "Let's call it 'du', we're pals after all, though I'm not a 'colleague' anymore," she jokes.
With less schedule to stick to, Ulrike is keeping busy with interviews, podcasts, travel, and even writing a book. Despite the whirlwind of activities, she confesses that she's been swamped with tasks she'd meant to tackle post-retirement, including catching up with experts and finishing topical projects.
When asked about her gradual retirement, Ulrike shares that she'd initially intended to take it easy, working only half of her original capacity. However, after a year, she decided that her heart wasn't really in it anymore.
"I didn't feel the need to painstakingly plan topics or struggle with controversial debates every day," she explains. "Retirement wasn't about going from 100% to nothing, but finding a balance."
Ulrike's environment hasn't been entirely supportive of her decision. "The pals say I'll miss it," she shares, "but I'm looking forward to escaping the spotlight and soaking up some peace and quiet after my book tour."
The book, a collection of tips and advice for the path ahead, stems from a series of thoughtful discussions with experts on aging gracefully, a subject that particularly resonates with Ulrike. She asserts that shrugging off the stigma surrounding aging and learning to embrace embracing wrinkles and changing bodies is key to aging well.
"Sports have always been a significant part of my life," Ulrike acknowledges, "but I don't consider myself a poster child for fitness. I'm all for choosing activities that make you feel good and fit within your capabilities."
Reading, an activity she neglected in her busy career, is now front and center in Ulrike's life. Her eyes light up when she discusses her love of books, admitting that she cherishes the moments when she can immerse herself in a good story.
"Since retirement, I've found solace in books," she says. "I even let go of my previous habit of finishing every book I start, a decision that has brought me more peace."
Currently whipping through Joachim Meyerhoff's latest book, Ulrike is excited to be reunited with her beloved books and looks forward to delving into her extensive collection this summer.
