Refreshing journey ahead: Discovering protective gear updates for hiking in spring

Spring's warmer weather and longer days inspire a newfound desire to get out and hike in the hills and mountains. While I do hike in the winter, springtime offers up more exciting adventures with remote, higher altitude trails. living in Scotland, my highest peak - Ben Nevis - is only 1,345m tall, but this still applies to many places worldwide, especially the Pacific Northwest and the east coast of America, where spring usually means unpredictable weather.

Prepare for anything by wearing the right clothing and carrying the essential gear. Here's my guide to spring hiking essentials.

Essential Gear for Spring Hiking

Hiking encompasses many different types of excursions, from local trails to forest walks, to routes on hills and mountains. While you can hike with minimal gear, for longer, more remote adventures, you'll need a bit more.

Waterproof Hiking Jacket

In spring, I switch from my heavy winter hiking jacket to a lighter, packable one that provides good rain protection. Look for a breathable, waterproof jacket with a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) treatment. A hood with a stiff brim is optional but always adjustable for a comfortable fit. To save space, choose a jacket that can pack easily in your backpack.

Hiking Pants or Tights

When the weather is cold, opt for tights for comfort and layer them depending on the temperature. Pants are also a good choice if you prefer more coverage. For warm days, consider a skort – a shorter garment that provides the same freedom of movement as shorts but offers extra coverage.

Waterproof Over-Pants

Wet hiking pants are no fun, so waterproof over-pants are a must for spring hikes if rain is expected. A waterproof, breathable fabric is crucial for keeping you comfy.

Base Layers

Base layers are essential for hiking, providing insulation in cold, wet conditions. Choose from a variety of options, such as long-sleeved underwear made of synthetic fibers or merino wool, to best suit the weather.

Puffer Jacket

For warmth and extra insulation, pack a puffer jacket, whether you wear it or put it on during breaks. Insulated jackets are perfect for those unexpected drops in temperature.

Hiking Footwear

Choose lightweight hiking boots or shoes depending on the weather. Waterproof is still a good idea, and look for boots with aggressive lugs for maximum grip.

Hiking Socks

Comfort is essential during long hikes, so opt for moisture-wicking socks. Look for brands like Darn Tough, which offers non-slip socks designed to prevent blisters.

Hiking Gaiters

Gaiters help keep water and debris out of your footwear, so pack a lightweight pair to protect your feet on wet trails.

Gloves

For cold days, pack a pair of gloves, and if you suffer from Raynaud's Syndrome like me, bring a few pairs, including waterproof and warm options.

Hiking Pack

While you can hike with a smaller pack compared to winter, you'll still need space for all your gear, so opt for a 20-35L backpack with a waterproof cover.

Sun Lotion and Sunglasses

For sunny days, protect your skin with SPF30 or higher sun lotion, and you'll need sunglasses with good eye protection. Consider sports-style sunglasses that fit well and offer excellent coverage.

Spring Headwear

You'll need a versatile hat for cooler, windy days and sunnier weather. Opt for a beanie or a sun hat, depending on the conditions.

Safety Kit

For your safety, always carry a map and compass, a cell phone with a route downloaded on a map app, a personal locator beacon, an emergency bivy sack, a small first aid kit, food, and water.
