Promised Tramway-Gas Future for Krasnoyarsk

City leader Vladislav Loginov, addressing the city council with a report on 2024's achievements, detailed future plans for public transportation in the city, particularly focusing on electric development.

Promised Tramway-Gas Future for Krasnoyarsk

Vladislav Loginov, the Mayor of Krasnoyarsk, delivered an address at a city council meeting, outlining plans for the development of public transportation, with a strong emphasis on electric vehicles. Let's dive into the details, but remember, there's more to this story than meets the eye.

The Troubled "Movista" Tram Concession

During the meeting, a question about the controversial concession agreement with "Movista" arose. Signed in the past, this agreement has faced criticism and is currently under legal scrutiny. The Mayor admitted that the agreement was signed after thorough examination alongside legal, prosecutorial, and monitoring departments. However, the agreement's conditions have not been met, as claimed by the city administration.

"We believe that the city of Krasnoyarsk and the government of Krasnoyarsk Krai have fulfilled all their obligations as concessionaires, but the project's implementation strategy was flawed. That's why I've sent a letter proposing the termination of the agreement either by mutual consent or due to the concessioner's failure to meet their obligations," declared the mayor.

All disputed issues will be addressed in court, but the mayor emphasized that terminating the current agreement does not mean abandoning electric transportation development. Quite the opposite, the authorities are determined to promote projects that would make the transportation system more efficient and eco-friendly.

Metrotram and Rail Transit

The Mayor listed the development of a metrotram as the top priority in public transportation planning. This project is currently considered strategically crucial for Krasnoyarsk.

In general, rail transit, including trams, continues to play a significant role in Krasnoyarsk's transportation system. According to the Mayor, trams are not only eco-friendly, but they are also convenient for residents because their routes are usually exclusive, minimizing traffic inconvenience.

Plans for Tramway Development

Replacing Old Trams

As of now, the Mayor reported, approximately 25 trams manufactured before 2000 (with some in the early 2000s) require replacement.

"We believe that approximately 25 trams today address the issue of the aging fleet," said the mayor.

Construction of Tram Lines through Shinniy Bridge

"Once that's done, the loop will be effective, and the passenger traffic will be correctly channeled," explained the Mayor.

Repair of Tram Lines on Matroсоva Street

"If you take a ride on Matrosova Street, you'll notice the poor condition of the tram lines. They undoubtedly need to be replaced. Moreover, the tram lines are unstable, and with the tram's movement, the asphalt around them is constantly being destroyed. We need to address this issue promptly. As for the cost, it's relatively modest, but we need to allocate funds for it."

Proposed Tram Line in Solnechny

While tram lines are not currently included in the future Solnechny Street project, the authorities are considering their construction in the future.

"Unfortunately, had we planned tram lines on Solnechny Street from the start, substantial costs would have been required for the road itself. We believe that tram lines should be constructed separately from the road because a road involves elevation changes, which tram lines do not allow. We need to create a line on artificial structures. Creating both tram lines and the road on artificial structures would be extremely costly. So, the question of tram lines will be addressed separately."

Self-driving Trolleybuses and Gas Buses

Another promising direction for electric transportation development, according to the Mayor, is the introduction of trolleybuses with autonomous operation. These vehicles don't require additional infrastructure, such as power posts or wires, making them a cost-effective solution.

"To have a self-driving trolleybus reach Solnechny, operate on a Solnechny route, make stops, rest, and return, we'd need only about 1.6 kilometers of line. That's enough for the electric transport to operate in Solnechny. We consider such solutions highly effective and beneficial for Krasnoyarsk, marking a significant contribution to the city's ecology."

Parallel to the development of electric transportation, the authorities plan to modernize the bus fleet of Krasnoyarsk. According to their plans, diesel buses will gradually be replaced by buses running on natural gas.

"We're slightly behind in infrastructure. The decision has already been made regarding the creation of an infrastructure for gas-powered buses. We know who the supplier is, we know where the refueling will take place, we know where to obtain the rolling stock. So, we will gradually phase out buses with diesel engines, replace them with gas-powered buses. This is the first step in the gasification of Krasnoyarsk, the Krasnoyarsk Krai."
