Intense Roadway Bottlenecks Precede Corpus Christi Holiday in North Rhine-Westphalia - Potential Traffic Gridlock: NRW Ahead of the Fronleichnams Weekend

🎉

Get ready for the long weekend ahead - families in NRW are gearing up for their last mini-vacation before the summer holidays! Roads are expected to be bustling again as ADAC forecasts heavy traffic and prolonged congestion at the start of the Corpus Christi weekend on Wednesday.

Last year, the start of the Corpus Christi weekend was among the three most congested days of the year, says Roman Suthold, head of traffic and environment at ADAC Nordrhein. "Expect bad traffic between 2 PM and 6 PM on Wednesday. Motorists and vacationers will be encountering each other," he warns. His advice: "Those who can leave in the evening or early on Thursday morning."

Although the bridge day on Friday is a non-workday only for students in North Rhine-Westphalia, many schools have planned one of their flexible holiday days for that day.

Apart from usual traffic hotspots in metropolitan areas like Cologne and the Ruhr area, highways leading to the German North and Baltic Sea coasts and the Netherlands will see increased traffic.

However, ADAC expects fewer vehicles from Thursday onwards. There might be issues on the A46 between Wuppertal and Düsseldorf, as the motorway company has announced a closure from Wednesday evening (8 PM) to Monday morning (5 AM). During this period, safety barrier work and bridge maintenance will be performed. Motorists should reroute around the area.

Particular caution should be exercised near the Oberhausen/Duisburg (Kaiserberg) junction and the entire Cologne motorway ring, where traffic congestion and slow-moving traffic are anticipated.

Smooth sailing is predicted for the return traffic on Sunday, as commuters won't be on the roads, and holiday traffic will be more dispersed.

  1. In light of the expected heavy traffic during the Corpus Christi weekend, it might be beneficial for some individuals to review the community policy regarding telecommuting or flexible work arrangements as an alternative to traveling during peak hours.
  2. While planning their trips, vacationers might want to consider the employment policy of their workplace regarding travel expenses and reimbursements, especially considering the extended travel period due to the predicted traffic congestion.
