Over the past year, this harbor has grown from a humble fisherman's nest into a hotspot for water-enthusiasts and travelers alike. Facing Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's rugged Baltic Sea coast, the harbor and its accompanying sea bridges have certainly carved themselves a permanent niche in the local maritime landscape.
A Safe Harbor for All
Backhaus' tenure has seen the completion of a Safari of sailors' dreams. And I ain’t just talking about providing a warm and welcoming spot for German Maritime Search and Rescue Association's (DGzRS) "Nis Randers" or the German Life Saving Association (DLRG) and fire department's water rescue support points. No sir! This shining star on the coast also serves as a comfy home port for local Preerow fisherfolk and a tempting pitstop for leisure-seeking sports enthusiasts.
Add to that the thriving tourism scene brought about by the eye-catching appeal of the island harbor and sea bridges, and it's no wonder the place has become the bee's knees for visitors far and wide.
Weathering the Storm
Preerow's harbor isn't just beautiful - it's tough as nails! Withstanding all the hydrodynamic loads, wallops of wind, and drenching waves the past winter had to offer, this harbor proved itself a Roman warrior in the face of Mother Nature.
Even during minor floods, this harbor remained a veritable rock in the ocean, keeping its operations humming along like an oiled-up timepiece. Ain't that something to write home about?
A Helping Hand in Need
From the start, this harbor has been there for folks in a fix. Seven times since its official commissioning, it's swung into action as an emergency harbor, rescuing sailors in peril and providing safe haven when the sea got a mind of its own.
Remember the time on June 11, when a stranded sailboat rocked the waters with two passengers and their furry companion aboard? Well, the fearless DGzRS came by, swooped the sailboat up, and gently tugged it into safe harbor. Not even the most terrifying of sea monsters could withstand that rescue!
Sailing towards the Horizon
Reflecting on the project's progression, Backhaus himself mused that it was a fine decision indeed for the state government to realize the island harbor and sea bridges as a state project - a decision worth waiting for, as Preerow's prospects for prosperity greatly outweighed the uncertainty of the past regarding an outer harbor on the Darß.
