Heavy Traffic Congestion on French Roads During Early August 2025

Traffic jams and delays are causing significant disruptions on French roads, particularly during the early days of August 2025. The peak holiday season is causing heavy congestion, especially on weekends.

On Saturday, August 2, Bison Futé classified the day as a "black day," indicating very heavy traffic and widespread traffic jams on major roads, particularly in the Rhône Valley and along the Mediterranean coasts. The period from August 1 to August 4 is expected to see complicated traffic conditions nationwide.

One of the most affected routes is the A7, which connects Lyon to Orange (Vaucluse). Vinci Autoroutes reports an increased travel time of 4 hours and 45 minutes to reach Orange from Lyon, compared to the usual 2 hours. Bison Futé recorded 782 kilometers of traffic jams in the departure direction of the A7. Additionally, on the A7, Bison Futé reported 126 kilometers of traffic jams towards the Mediterranean on August 2.

The A9, particularly between Nîmes and Montpellier, is also experiencing heavy congestion. On August 2, 75 kilometers of slowdowns were recorded on the A9, also towards the Mediterranean.

The traffic jams are due to the traditional summer holiday traffic exchange between July and August vacationers. Last year, in 2024, a peak of over 1,050 kilometers of cumulative traffic jams was recorded during this summer holiday traffic exchange, according to Bison Futé. In previous years, Bison Futé recorded over 1,000 kilometers of traffic jams during a summer holiday traffic exchange.

The difficulties of the traffic exchange, which are expected to continue until Monday, had already begun on Friday, a red day for departures from the Hauts-de-France to Brittany, via Normandy, Île-de-France, and the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.

Roadworks in the Île-de-France region during August 2025, including closures on major routes like the A6a and road 406, exacerbate traffic difficulties, although this work is scheduled to minimize travel disruption during traditionally lower traffic periods.

Travelers should anticipate slow travel times, traffic jams, and delays on these key routes during this peak holiday period. Monitoring official traffic information such as from Bison Futé and Vinci Autoroutes is advised for real-time updates and alternative route suggestions. It is recommended to avoid travel on the busiest days, particularly August 2.
