Historic Danish Sailing Ship Danmark Docks in Reykjavik, Offers Youth Sailing Opportunities

The 97-year-old Danish sailing vessel, Danmark, has made its way to the Ægisgarður dock in Reykjavik Harbour. This historic schooner, known for its storied past, is currently serving as a maritime training ship for young sailors. Among these trainees is 21-year-old Viktor Oern Ingvarsson.

Since February, Viktor has embarked on an extraordinary voyage, crossing the Atlantic alongside approximately 80 fellow young seafarers. This journey began in Málaga, Spain, and will culminate in Denmark in July, with stops in Portugal, Ireland, and Iceland along the way.

A fortuitous encounter

Intrigued by an online ad for crew members, Viktor joined the voyage without much hesitation. The adventure unfolded, setting sail earlier this year, and has offered a multitude of challenges and experiences.

Life on board the Danmark demands dedication, as responsibilities are divided among the young crew members daily. The crew is often tasked with climbing the ship's tallest mast (nearing 40 meters in height) to secure or adjust the sails.

Seafaring tests of courage

For Viktor, a self-described thrill-seeker, the physically and mentally demanding tasks have been part of the allure. While the weather has generally been favorable, the journey has presented its fair share of risks, earning Viktor a few battle scars.

The maritime training journey on the Danmark offers a unique, challenging, and truly educational experience for adventurous young sailors. Through actual seafaring, these trainees learn essential seamanship skills such as sail handling, navigation, and teamwork. No prior sailing experience is required, but a willingness to undertake physically and mentally challenging tasks is essential.

Trainees must be prepared for the hard work, teamwork, and extended periods at sea that come with this immersive program. The route covers significant Atlantic passages, with ports in Southern Europe, Ireland, Iceland, and Denmark, providing a broad exposure to ocean sailing and life aboard a historic tall ship.

Weather conditions have added an extra element of excitement to Viktor's travel experiences, with the physically demanding tasks on the Danmark requiring him to adapt to different lifestyle demands at sea. As the vessel sails through various ports, including Iceland, sports enthusiasts might find this opportunity to learn seamanship skills an appealing addition to their lifestyle pursuits.
