Krabi airport, strikingly on the rise, is shaping up to be one of the nation's major aviation centers after five international airlines have thrown their hats in the ring for landing slots. This fierce competition signals a growing worldwide confidence in the airport's capacity and potential as a gateway to the Andaman region.
Manaporn Charoensri, the Deputy Transport Minister, shares that the Department of Airports (DoA) showcased the potential and development plans for airports under its management, including Krabi and Surat Thani, at the 156th International Air Transport Association (IATA) Slot Conference in Vancouver, Canada.
Following the conference, eight airlines expressed interest in making their mark in Krabi. Among them, the five bold-eyed contenders—Etihad Airways, Air Arabia, Malaysia Airlines, Firefly Airlines, and Loong Air—have put in their formal requests for landing slots, marking a significant boost to direct international flights to Krabi, now boasting over 50 weekly departures.
"The increasing international demand for Krabi airport reveals its growing appeal," Manaporn notes, adding that Etihad Airways and Air Arabia's interest will establish the first air links with the United Arab Emirates and the Middle East, a monumental step forward for regional air connectivity.
This breakthrough reflects the airport's strengths in safety, security, services, and infrastructure - credentials that cement its reputation as the "Gateway to the Andaman Sea."
The interest from Middle Eastern carriers points towards Krabi airport's potential to ascend to the enviable position of a leading international airport. It also underscores Thailand's broader capacity to boost its tourism, economy, and global connectivity. The DoA is committed to investing in improvements to service quality and infrastructure across all airports, aligning with international aviation standards, ensuring readiness for the aviation sector's future growth.
Danai Rueangsorn, the DoA director-general, shares that, in addition to the five airlines, IndiGo Airlines, India's largest low-cost carrier, has requested to launch three additional routes to Krabi from Delhi, Kolkata, and Hyderabad.
With Krabi's growing importance as a strategic international aviation hub, it's set to play an even more influential role in connecting Southeast Asia with the Middle East and South Asia.
