Kolkata Introduces Dheu, its initial electric watercraft, for more environmentally-friendly and silent river voyages
In the heart of Kolkata, a new obsession has emerged, redefining the city's relationship with its historic riverfront. Dheu, Bengal's first zero-emission ferry, is more than just a mode of transport - it's a symbol of innovation and sustainability.
Built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) at a cost of INR 13.5 crore, Dheu is the largest and fastest fully electric ferry in the country, marking a significant shift towards green transportation in the region. Launched about six months ago, Dheu is not only Bengal's first zero-emission ferry but also GRSE's first fully electric vessel.
The sleek, green catamaran was designed in collaboration with IIT Kharagpur using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), ensuring stability and minimal disturbance to the surrounding ecosystem. With a seating capacity of 92, Dheu offers both air-conditioned and non-AC sections, providing comfort and green consciousness in one quiet, electric hum.
Dheu operates on the Hooghly River, a city known for its timeless connection with the river. The two-hour sightseeing ride offers a unique perspective on Kolkata's iconic riverside landmarks, including the Howrah Bridge, Bally Bridge, Dakshineswar, and Belur Math. This cultural revival rekindles Kolkata's age-old connection with the Hooghly River, offering a new way to experience these landmarks.
Dheu's introduction marks a significant shift in Bengal's maritime landscape. By replacing ageing and polluting diesel ferries on the Ganga and Bhagirathi rivers, Dheu is not only reducing pollution and noise but also setting a benchmark for eco-friendly urban mobility.
The ferry offers environmental benefits, with zero emissions, and appeals to locals seeking a calm escape from the bustling city. It's also a tourist attraction, offering a family-friendly experience that appeals to those seeking a different way to explore Kolkata.
An official from GRSE expressed pride in designing and building Dheu, stating, "We are proud to have designed and built Dheu, a testament to our commitment to sustainable and innovative solutions in maritime transport."
The Bengal Film Archive, located in West Bengal, Kolkata, is keeping cinema history alive in the city. Similarly, Dheu is keeping Kolkata's love affair with the Hooghly River alive, offering a cleaner, greener, and more inclusive way to experience the scenic beauty of the Hooghly River.
For those seeking a unique and enjoyable experience, Dheu offers rides for INR 300 (AC) or INR 200 (non-AC). Hop on board and experience the green revolution in maritime transport that is Dheu.
