International LGBTQ+ Travel Association Introduces Proud Destination Program

In a significant move towards promoting inclusivity in travel, Spain has become the first destination to join the International LGBTQ+ Travel Association's (IGLTA) Proud Destination Program. The Tourist Office of Spain, Turespaña, follows suit, marking a commitment to offering a rich tapestry of culture, history, and welcoming experiences for LGBTQ+ travelers.

The Proud Destination Program, launched by IGLTA, highlights destinations that are dedicated to long-term LGBTQ+ inclusion and welcoming travel experiences. Participating destinations, such as Ecuador, Peru, Colombia, and Curacao, collaborate with local LGBTI chambers to create travel experiences that are respectful and affirming of LGBTQ+ identities.

Curacao, in particular, has been recognised with the IGLTA Breakout Destination Award, a testament to its commitment to championing diversity and equality. This recognition underscores the program's role in promoting marriage equality and inclusive tourism initiatives, boosting the international visibility and appeal of destinations among LGBTQ+ travelers.

By joining the program, participating destinations gain increased international exposure through IGLTA's global platform, access to specialized guidance, and opportunities to position themselves as trusted, welcoming destinations for the LGBTQ+ community. Recognition through awards and events further enhances their reputation for diversity and equality.

Tatiana Rokou, who monitors news sources for IGLTA's Media Network, emphasizes the importance of recognizing destinations that are stepping up in a time when some travel brands are stepping back from LGBTQ+ visibility. Rokou, who holds a Bachelor's degree in Communication & Mass Media from Panteion University of Political & Social Studies of Athens, has worked as editor and editor-in-chief in various economic magazines and newspapers.

The IGLTA, with its global network of over 13,000 LGBTQ+ welcoming accommodations, destinations, service providers, travel agents, tour operators, events, and travel media in 80 countries, is a global leader in advancing LGBTQ+ travel. The philanthropic IGLTA Foundation empowers LGBTQ+ welcoming travel businesses globally through leadership, research, and education.

Spain's decision to join the Proud Destination Program comes at an opportune time, as 90% of LGBTQ+ travelers from the U.S. express strong interest in visiting Spain in the coming years. This collective participation helps destinations like Ecuador, Peru, Colombia, and Curacao to attract a wider and more loyal traveler base, similar to the impact observed for Spain.

Furthermore, Spain is preparing to host the 2026 IGLTA Global Convention in Seville, further solidifying its commitment to the LGBTQ+ community and the travel industry. IGLTA is a proud Affiliate Member of UN Tourism, underscoring its mission to enable authentic travel that enriches lives and connects the LGBTQ+ community and tourism industry.

It is important to note that the International LGBTQ+ Travel Association (IGLTA) is not involved in any advertisements mentioned in this article. The benefits of the program extend beyond increased visibility, offering participating destinations the opportunity to advocate for safety, inclusivity, and equal rights in travel, and to be part of a network that champions these values. Being an IGLTA Proud Destination sends a clear message that inclusion matters and LGBTQ+ travelers are welcome.

Participating destinations like Spain, Ecuador, Peru, Colombia, and Curacao, by joining the Proud Destination Program launched by IGLTA, aim to offer welcoming travel experiences that align with LGBTQ+ identities, thereby enhancing their reputation as diverse and inclusive destinations for lifestyle travel. The program's recognition, such as the IGLTA Breakout Destination Award won by Curacao, signifies a commitment to championing equality and promoting travel that respects and affirms LGBTQ+ identities.
