Soaring Demand for Campsites Sparks Alternative Accommodation Project in Halle, Saxony-Anhalt
Insufficient parking spaces expedite campsite project progression in Halle. - Insufficient parking spaces sparks a camping initiative in Halle.
Spurred by the growing interest in tourism and camping, Halle and its surrounding area are facing a shortage of suitable campsites for tents and motorhomes. A spokesperson for the city marketing department revealed that, in the first month of the camping season, they have been receiving around 10-20 inquiries per week about overnight accommodations via email and phone.
To address this gap, an initiative called "Got space in your garden? Campers are waiting!" has been launched in the city, which allows residents to offer their private gardens, yards, or meadows as temporary campsites for travelers. This grassroots project, which has received backing from the state, has six new hosts on board and will soon provide approximately 42 campsites to accommodate the increasing demand. These campsites range from inner-city courtyards to plots by the Wallendorfer See.
In addition to these private campsites, Halle boasts 13 public camping, parking, and parking facilities. One particularly popular spot is the campsite at the Tennisclub Sandanger, which has registered about 70 vehicles with 140 guests during the first ten weeks of the season, averaging five to six campers per week, with two guests per camper on average.
Despite the efforts of the alternative accommodation project, official municipal campsites in Halle remain scarce. The campsites at Faehrstraße and Am Nordbad offer a combined total of just 26 pitches for caravans and tents. This is far from meeting the escalating demand, according to city marketing.
The boom in camping tourism across Saxony-Anhalt is a growing segment of the state's overall tourism industry. Overnight stays at campsites have surged by more than 46 percent compared to 2019, as revealed by the Saxony-Anhalt Tourism Association in February.
The "Got space in your garden? Campers are waiting!" project was introduced in 2023 and operates on a principle akin to couchsurfing. Hosts make their private spaces available to travelers, often in exchange for a donation or help with gardening tasks.
