Impressions of India by Nina Blum: "Experience of stepping into a different universe."

The Kamptal throws on a dash of Indian charm this summer, as the Rosenburg stage dons vibrant sari-inspired designs for some weeks. Nina Blum, director of the "Midsummer Night's Comedy Rosenburg," brings the culture-clash comedy "Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" to life - or rather, to the theater tent. This intriguing play is set in the captivating Indiancity of Jaipur and serves as the German premiere in the tenth summer theater season at the castle. In our exclusive interview with Nina, she shares her affection for the subcontinent and the breathtaking experiences that led to her love affair with India.

Chatting with Nina Blum

You're not just presenting India in the new play. You've visited the country yourself multiple times.

India is a place that stole my heart, and I've had the fortune of visiting five times. My last trip was five years ago in Kerala, Southern India. After weaning my daughter, I was rather drained. My husband suggested, "Why not head to India? It always rejuvenates you." I embarked on an Ayurveda cure and yoga retreat, which I thought would be my least Indian trip due to lack of exploration. But it was incredibly restorative. India possesses a unique spiritual quality that constantly confronted me, no matter what form I encountered.

Many people get acquainted with India through Ayurveda or yoga. However, it has little to do with India's essence.

I became familiar with India before that. My first time was in Rajasthan, exploring Jaipur and the renowned Taj Mahal. My second adventure took me to the exotic Ladakh, a region few travelers seem to venture. I went trekking in the Himalayas with my best friend, immersing myself in an original, simple experience. My third time was spent in Amritsar, near the border with Pakistan, where escalating conflict is deeply saddening. Yet, the Golden Temple is impressively beautiful.

Did you also visit Dharamsala, home to the Dalai Lama?

Yes, at one point the Dalai Lama was actually there, providing a "public blessing." Though I'm not a Buddhist, I wondered what I was doing there. The Dalai Lama spoke about the importance of dealing with one's own religious background before delving into Hinduism or Buddhism. That sentiment resonated deeply with me.

First-time visitors to India are often initially taken aback - the immense population, often dirty streets...

You either love India or you dislike it wholly. I find many aspects difficult, like the caste system and the notion of arranged marriages, which is puzzling to us. During a train ride to Rishikesh, I had a fascinating conversation with a young Indian. He said, "There's no one who treats me better than my parents, so I trust them without question." That's a value concept foreign to us. It's intriguing and often challenging to grapple with these Indian sensibilities.

Lighting up the Festival of Lights in India: Illumination, burning

Much of India's charm lies in the vivid colors, evocative scents, and mouthwateringfood. I've always found the Indians to be positive and welcoming. If you open yourself to the magic of this land, you'll feel transported to another world.
