June 1st Marks the 20th World Heritage Day: Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland Offer Unique Cultural Experiences
On Sunday, the 1st of June, numerous UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland will celebrate World Heritage Day. The theme for this year is "Communicate, connect, inspire."
In Saarland, the Völklingen Ironworks will open its doors, offering a variety of experiences that blend industry, culture, history, art, and nature. The celebrations include an arts trail, children's tours, time travel through the epochs, and a sound walk.Visitors can enjoy a reduced fee of nine euros for the exhibition in the blast furnace hall "The True Size of Africa" on Sunday.
Rhineland-Palatinate's Schum sites, including Speyer, Worms, and Mainz, will offer free guided tours. In Worms, visitors can explore the Jewish Museum Raschi-Haus or learn about the history and significance of the Schum community with original sources from the 14th century. Speyer's Highlights include performances by the group "Klezmers Techter" and the choir of the Jewish religious community in the Jewish Court, as well as a short concert titled "Fascination of the Cathedral Organ." Families can participate in a rally where children receive keychains at the end.
The name Schum sites refers to the Hebrew initials for the three cities that were centers of Jewish scholarship in the Middle Ages. There will also be free guided tours on the Old Jewish Cemetery "Judensand" in Mainz.
In Bingen, located in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, a unique setting on the Rhine promises a varied program. Activities include a discovery tour with Father Rhine, exhibitions of Roman medical equipment, historical crane demonstrations, and a walk through history at the Mouse Tower. Admission is free for all events.
