Low-Cost Carrier Pobeda's Carry-On Luggage Size Reduction Found Illegal

The Moscow Interregional Prosecutor's Office has determined that Pobeda, a Russian airline, illegally reduced the size of carry-on luggage allowed on its flights. The decision was made due to the excessive stringency of the airline's dimensions for hand-carried bags.

Pobeda had decreased the size of carry-on luggage to 4 cm, a move that left several passengers unable to bring essential items on board without charge. However, the carrier permits passengers to bring a bag or briefcase that does not exceed the calibrator's dimensions. A notable point is that the law forbids any restrictions on the size of such items.

The Shcherbinsky District Court of Moscow agreed with the transport prosecutor's stance, ruling that Pobeda's actions were unlawful. Consequently, the airline will revise its rules to adhere to the legal framework, potentially offering relief to tourists during the summer season. This adjustment could save tourists from unnecessary spending on flights, particularly travelers who frequently use low-cost airlines.

It is worth noting that Pobeda enforces its rules meticulously. There have been instances where the airline has asked passengers to check their backpacks, even if they were produced by the company itself and designed specifically for travel purposes.

The court's ruling came in response to a statement of claim submitted by the Moscow prosecutor, addressing violation of passenger rights, particularly the rights of passengers with children. The court's decision aligns with the findings and recommendations of the prosecutor's office to address such practices.
