Friggin' Traffic Fiasco

Massive traffic jams on Austrian highways during Pentecost Saturday paralyzed travel all the way to Bavaria, with the Tauern motorway (A10) bearing the brunt of the chaos.

The Time Of My Life? More Like A Nightmare!

A traffic jam formed on the Tauern motorway (A10) in Salzburg at the Golling tunnel construction site, reaching a length of almost 50 kilometers at times. As one traveler lamented to ORF, "The traffic jam extended over the Walserberg as far back as the Bavarian town of Neukirchen." Waiting times for some were up to an infuriating five hours.

Alternatives? Ha! More Like Nightmares

There were also considerable delays on detour routes. The federal road B150, a popular alternative to the A10, was also affected by heavy traffic. Many vacationers tried to steer clear of the traffic jam by leaving the motorway, but to no avail. As one camper put it, "Many of us drove off the A10 in the night to camp on supermarket parking lots in nearby villages." Little did they know that relief was nowhere in sight.

Carma's a Bitch

There were also long traffic jams on the Brenner motorway (A13) in Tyrol. Motorists endured over three hours of waiting time. The cause? An unexpected partial closure at the border tunnel on the Italian side. Alexander Holzedl, spokesman for ASFINAG, explained to ORF, "The closed section wasn't communicated appropriately." Unfair, to say the least!

Impact on Bavarian Border Regions

The traffic jams in Austria had a direct impact on the Bavarian border regions, particularly areas around Neukirchen and the Walserberg. There were even tailbacks on the A8 near Neukirchen. The exit closures imposed by the province of Salzburg? A waste of time, according to ORF.

Other Affected Routes - Also Fernpass and A9 Blocked

In addition to the main routes A10 and A13, other routes were also affected by the increased traffic, including the Fernpass route (B179) and Innsbruck area, along with Styria's Pyhrn motorway (A9).

Tightening the Screws

In response to the high traffic volume, Austrian Interior Minister Gerhard Karner announced stricter controls. He said, "The 'Action safe' [provides] a means to reduce the number of accidents, thus increasing road safety." Targeted controls, especially on popular motorcycle routes, were planned.

Travel Advice

Expect heavy travel traffic in the coming days as vacationers from Bavaria and other parts of Germany hit the road. Plan more time for your journey, consider alternative routes if possible, stay updated on traffic reports, and adapt travel times as necessary. The ADAC had already warned about the potential issue at the Golling tunnel construction site, and it's no joke—Pentecost is one of the most traffic-heavy times of the year for the automobile club.

Remember, the traffic situation can change rapidly, so stay flexible and be ready to adjust your plans if needed. The authorities are doing their best to alleviate the traffic congestion, but with increased traffic expected, it's a challenge they'll face in the days to come.

Additional Insights

  • Causes
  • The major culprits behind the traffic chaos were a tunnel construction site, holiday traffic, and alternate route overload. The Hiefler Tunnel closing temporarily due to a defective vehicle also played a role.
  • Consequences
  • The traffic jams stretched over 50 kilometers and resulted in waiting times of up to five hours, severely impacting travel plans. Many travelers were forced to seek overnight parking in alternative locations. The gridlock created additional incidents due to frustrated and tired drivers.
  • Other Contributing Factors
  • The high traffic volume was also significant in regions like Tyrol and Styria, further contributing to the overall congestion.

During the Pentecost weekend, the Tauern motorway (A10) in Salzburg, originally intended for a seamless travel experience, became a 50-kilometer-long traffic jam due to construction at the Golling tunnel.

vacationers, seeking to dodge the traffic gridlock, attempted to switch to alternative routes, like the federal road B150, but found themselves facing stagnant movement there as well.
