Failed US Public Health Inspection: Global Voyage of Villa Vie Residences

News Article: Villa Vie Odyssey Fails CDC Health Inspection Despite Ongoing Operations

The luxury cruise liner Villa Vie Odyssey, launched earlier this year as a permanent residence ship, has faced a setback following a failed US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) health inspection on July 9, 2025. The ship scored 81 out of 100, falling below the passing mark of 86.

Despite this, the US Coast Guard inspection was successful, allowing the Villa Vie Odyssey to operate without significant delays. The CDC health inspection failure indicates there are health and sanitation issues that the ship needs to address to meet the required standards.

The vessel, operated by Villa Vie Residences, continues to welcome residents and guests while working towards improving its health inspection score. The ship offers an “unlimited stay” package, reflecting the company’s determination to continue operations despite the health inspection setback.

Inspection findings revealed several issues, including drain covers in the swimming pools that had been painted over, insufficient safety signage, malfunctioning dishwasher nozzles, and serious issues with the quality of drinking water on board. Chlorine levels in drinking water samples on three days in early June were below minimum requirements. Cooking equipment on board was found to be improperly cleaned, and a waffle iron used by guests at breakfast was deemed soiled with grease. Inspectors also criticized the temperatures at which dairy products, including milk, cream, and desserts, were kept.

Despite these issues, a couple, Lanette and Johan Canen, have decided to spend the next 15 years living on the Villa Vie Odyssey ship. The Canens, who previously lived in Hawaii for ten years and sold their rental car business to afford their cabin on the ship, find the service on the ship outstanding and feel like royalty. They have been living on the ship for 10 months and find it a 'no brainer' for their retirement.

The cost of sharing a room on the Villa Vie Odyssey ship is £1,403 a month per person, which is comparable to average rent and bills in London, but includes luxury travel around the world. The Villa Vie Residences launched residency packages for the Villa Vie Odyssey liner earlier this year, offering travel to more than 400 destinations in 147 countries.

Johan believes that the rise of working from home will make a ship like the Villa Vie Odyssey more attractive as a living option, while Lanette believes that with rising rent costs worldwide, living on a ship like the Villa Vie Odyssey will become a popular way of living. The Villa Vie Odyssey appeals to the Canens because it allows them to downsize and shrug off material responsibilities.

The Villa Vie Odyssey continues to sail, with ongoing efforts to meet health standards and address the issues identified in the CDC inspection.
