Visitors Surpass Previous Records in Tourist Arrivals - Explosive growth in tourism reported

In the first half of 2021, Germany witnessed a remarkable surge in tourism, with record-breaking overnight stays, according to the Federal Statistical Office. This resurgence was primarily driven by a boom in domestic tourism, as international travel restrictions and the absence of major events like the Football Euros dampened foreign demand.

The increase in overnight stays by Germans was partly due to the late Pentecost holidays, which fell in June. Despite a decrease in guests from abroad during the same month (-12.7%), the gap was more than made up for by an increase in overnight stays by Germans (+7.4%). This shift towards local tourism supported the accommodation and tourism sector within Germany, with the total number of overnight stays in establishments with at least ten beds reaching 50.5 million, a 3.8% increase from the previous year.

The city of Wiesbaden, Germany, also experienced an increase in overnight stays in establishments with at least ten beds in June. Business trips and vacations contributed to this growth, with vacation and business trips in Germany at a record high, amounting to 223.3 million overnight stays in the first half of the year.

The growing use of online platforms facilitated independent travel planning, allowing travelers to plan and book trips more easily. This resilience in the accommodation industry and related hospitality sectors reflected strong local demand that outweighed reduced foreign visitor numbers.

Regional studies show that tourism remains a vital economic factor, with day trips and overnight stays significantly contributing to local economies, even when international demand is subdued. The increase in overnight stays in establishments with at least ten beds in Germany in June was not solely due to the Football European Championship, despite the event attracting fans from all countries the previous year.

This record break is a testament to Germany's tourism industry's resilience and adaptability, demonstrating that even in challenging times, the sector can recover and thrive with a focus on domestic travel and innovative planning tools.

  1. Adapting to the community policy of prioritizing domestic travel amid international restrictions, Germans opted for vacation training, engaging in vocational training programs to improve their skills for independent travel planning, thus transforming their lifestyles.
  2. Beyond their hometowns, Germans ventured out for vacations, augmenting the numbers for vocational training opportunities in various destinations, reflecting a shift in their travel lifestyle fueled by the surge in domestic tourism.
