The much-anticipated Düsseldorf Christmas market returned in 2021, albeit with some changes due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Local vendors, such as the von Olnhausen family's stands, were among those feeling the impact of the restrictions.

Markus von Olnhausen, a key figure in the family business, revealed that half of their annual turnover comes from the Düsseldorf Christmas market. However, due to the cancellation of the Christmas market in the previous year, the von Olnhausens, like many others, faced economic challenges.

The 2021 market saw the return of popular attractions such as the Ferris wheel on Burgplatz and the ice rink on Corneliusplatz. The glühwein pyramid, a staple of the festive city, was relocated to the pedestrian bridge between Grün- and Bastionsstraße.

Despite the challenges, the von Olnhausens were back at the market from November 18 to December 30, with their stands featuring grilled mushrooms, Camembert, and Feuerzangenbowle.

New locations were created for the 2021 market, including the first-ever Ko-Lichter-Markt and huts on Gustaf-Gründgens-Platz. Huts that were removed from their original locations could be found on Königsallee, Ko-Bogen, and Marktstraße towards Burgplatz.

However, the market was not the same as pre-pandemic years. Visitor numbers were significantly reduced, with only 200 buses from the Netherlands registering this week, compared to up to 1800 in peak periods before Corona. The children's program and Christmas singing were cancelled, and tourists from neighbouring countries were maintaining their distance.

To ensure safety, the market followed the AHA rules, with visitors encouraged to wear medical masks. The 3G rule was implemented, with random checks being conducted.

Ole Friedrich, another key figure in the von Olnhausen family's stands, mentioned that their Christmas market concept allows everyone to feel comfortable and safe. Despite the challenges, the market remained an important seasonal economic driver for local businesses, providing essential income during the holiday period.
