Efficient Public Electric Vehicle Charging Stations Deliver as Expected, Yet a Persisting Issue Remains Unaddressed
Reimagined Rant: The Juggernaut of EV Charging
You'd think the bloke in the moon thought he'd discovered fire, the way folks are buzzing about public EV chargers these days! Just a few short years past, the thought of using one was enough to turn your stomach. Would it work? Would it even accept your card? A roll of the dice, that's what it felt like.
Recently, I found myself behind the wheel of a brand-spanking new electric Porsche Macan. No, not the brash, bougie Turbo model. Nope, Porsche's PR peeps were kind enough to send over a plain ol' Macan RWD, the entry-level variant sporting a rear-wheel setup and a solitary motor. It may not be the swiftest or the strongest, but it's the leanest and boasts the longest range of any Macan EV, making it the perfect test subject.
Given its near-tottering battery when it arrived, I wasn't in a rush to find a charger. A couple days of errands, a London-to-Somerset road trip, and a jaunt to Glastonbury later, I thought it was due for a refuel. Solstice Services, near Stonehenge, came answers to my prayers. Excuse me if I expressed a teeny bit of skepticism when I took the Porsche-marked key fob and plugged the car in, but the charger I'd found promised a rapid 274 kW charge. Score one for optimism.
Speedy as a lightning bolt, the Macan averaged well over three miles per kWh (and even shot up to 4.0 during city driving), smashing Porsche's own specs. I'd gone from a Genesis GV60 that barely scraped 3.0 mph to this speed demon in weeks, and it felt like a game-changer.
The very next day, Google Maps yanked me off course, and I found myself in desperate need of a charger. Luckily, I stumbled upon a set of brand-spanking new Gridserve rapid chargers. No pre-prepping of the battery, no stress—I just plugged in and watched the electrons flow. Soon, I was zipping off to the Cotswolds, secure in the knowledge that my ride was ready for another round.
None of this would have garnered so much as a yawn if I were cruising around in a petrol car. But after years of frustration, the UK's EV network is finally proving itself worthy of all the hype. Okay, maybe I got lucky with those Gridserve chargers, but it was the first time I'd rocked up at a service station blind and exited within minutes with a battery full of juice.
Now, here's the kicker—this convenience comes at a price. Public chargers (especially rapid ones) are still eye-wateringly expensive. In my experience, each kWh sets you back about 79p. Fast charge half of the Macan's battery, and it'll cost you a cool £40 for around 150 miles of range. Yeah, let that sink in. You could charge overnight at home for just £3.20, or fill 'er up from empty for £6.40—both options are about 12 times cheaper than a public rapid charger.
Is the convenience of a super-fast charger really worth that premium? As EVs progress and go further, the need to charge in public should diminish. If only those charger prices would follow suit— though I won't hold my breath on that one.
Charging at home isn't an option for everyone, though. Around 30% of UK residents lack off-street parking, so while we're making strides in EV technology and infrastructure, we've still got a long way to go before the UK can make good on its pledge to go zero-emission by 2035.
