Motorhome/ Caravan Speed Stickers: What's the Deal?
In France, it's the law that vehicles towing a caravan, car, or trailer with a Gross Train Mass (GTM) of over 3.5 tonnes must adhere to reduced speed limits. These limits are:
- 80 km/h on single carriageways
- 90 km/h on dual carriageways/ motorways
French-registered vehicles must display black and white speed limit stickers on the back of their vehicles to show they are restricted to these speeds.
Who Are These Speed Limits For?
These speed limits apply exclusively to vehicles towing a caravan, car, or trailer in France. If you're not towing a vehicle, these limits don't apply.
In summary, these speed restriction of 80/90 km/h apply to:
- vehicles towing a caravan, car, or trailer with a GTM of over 3.5 tonnes
- in France
Non-towing vehicles, over 3.5 tonnes, are restricted to:
- 110 (motorway)
- 100 (dual carriageway)
- 80 (single carriageway)
No stickers are required for vehicles adhering to these speed limits.
Are UK Registered Vehicles Required to Display These Stickers?
The million-dollar question: "Do UK registered vehicles need to display slower speed stickers when traveling in France?"
After inquiries with the Automobile Club de France (ACF), the Caravan & Motorhome Club received conflicting reports. The official advice they received was no, UK registered vehicles do not need to display these stickers. However, due to inconsistencies in responses, it's advisable to exercise caution when towing.
It might be a good idea to put the stickers on to avoid potential hassle with the French police.
Regardless, drivers should be aware that they are responsible for knowing and adhering to all legal speed limits.
