Camping Prices Rise at Select Sites in Thuringia Amid Operational Cost Hikes
Holidaymakers planning a camping trip in Thuringia may encounter increased costs for overnight stays and additional charges this season. This price increase affects both short-term and long-term campers, as confirmed by multiple campsite operators in response to a dpa request. The spike in operational costs for campsite operators is the primary reason for the price hike, with escalating personnel costs and surging electricity costs being key factors.
While camping remains a comparatively affordable accommodation option in Thuringia, both domestically and abroad, the average cost for a camping pitch including caravan, electricity, and local tax has risen by approximately 4.2% compared to 2024, according to the "camping.info" online portal. The average cost now stands at €24.21. Compared to other federal states, Thuringia ranks amongst the more cost-effective destinations for campers, with Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania charging €33.20 and the national average standing at €28.86.
Personnel constraints pose a significant challenge for many campsites, with a spokesperson from the campsite near Oberhof's Lütschesee stating that it is difficult to retain staff without offering competitive wages. Consequently, overnight prices have been raised for the 2025 season at this campsite with 150 pitches for motorhomes, caravan trailers, and tents. Similar circumstances apply to the campsite Hohenfelden in the Weimar region, where overnight stays cost more this year, price adjustments depending on the main and low season.
At the Meyersgrund campsite near Ilmenau, tourist prices remain constant, but there are increases for long-term campers. Pricing policies vary between sites, with some including showering and electricity in a comprehensive package, while others charge extra for these amenities and waste disposal.
The long Ascension and Pentecost weekends traditionally draw large numbers of campers. Manuela Zanker, co-owner of the Meyersgrund campsite, confirmed that they are fully booked for these periods this year. The favorable calendar, featuring a relatively late Easter and the 1st of May extending into a long holiday weekend with optimal spring weather, has contributed to increased attendance. Schniz, chairman of the Association of Thuringian Camping, reported that the booking situation for the holidays remains strong.
Camping popularity has surged in recent years, with the number of overnight stays in Thuringia increasing by 6.1% compared to the previous year to over 846,000 in 2024, based on data from the Thuringian Statistical Office. Around 314,000 holidaymakers stayed on the nearly 100 campsites and caravan parks in Thuringia, with an average stay of 2.7 days.
