"Artisanal Board Game 'Hop ON It' Showcases Ontario's Breweries"
Embark on a fun and interactive journey to explore Ontario's vibrant brewery scene with "Hop ON It", a unique card game created by artist Della vanDokkumburg from Conestogo, Ont.
This colourful game features over 100 breweries across Ontario, each card representing a distinctive brewery and its unique architecture. You can purchase the full game directly from vanDokkumburg's website, or even have a sneak peek at select breweries in the Waterloo Region, such as Block Three[1].
"Hop ON It" is more than just a game; it's a tool to discover new breweries and new beers in Ontario. The game aims to promote local businesses and encourage players to try out breweries they haven't visited before. As Scott Williard, the general manager of Block Three, mentioned, the game supports a local artist while bringing business to local beer joints.
The game can be played in several ways. You can take a subset of cards and use them for a road trip, visiting the breweries listed on the cards. Alternatively, you can flip the cards individually from the deck, with the player who has visited the most breweries winning the game. At the end of the game, a card from the discard pile can be chosen, and the player visits the corresponding brewery.
Della vanDokkumburg started sketching breweries in 2018, and her initial question was, "How can I encourage people to explore?" Her solution was to turn it into a card game. The cards in "Hop ON It" are colour-coded by region: Central West (blue), Southwest (red), Central East (orange), East (green), and Toronto (turquoise).
VanDokkumburg plans to create another expansion pack with around 50 more cards for the game, ensuring there's always a new brewery to discover. So, are you ready to hop on and explore Ontario's breweries?
