In a buzzing press conference in Shillong, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, spilled the beans that this beautiful state has been stealing hearts for its stunning natural beauty. "We're planning to spark sustainable development by capitalizing on the limitless potential of the tourism sector," he said.

With this injection of cash, Meghalaya is looking primed to take center stage in India's Northeast's tourism game. Sonowal made it clear that the central government is gearing up to take the tourism sector by storm and has allocated funds under the Swadesh Darshan scheme to fund eco-friendly tourism initiatives across the state.
Showcasing Nature's Best: Iconic Destinations Revamped
This move aims to transform iconic destinations, like Umiam Lake, Sohpetbneng, Krang Suri Falls, Siju Caves, and Nokrek Reserve, into world-class tourist attractions. The government is also setting its sights on showcasing cultural and spiritual tourism sites, such as the sacred Mawphlang grove and the ancient temple town of Nartiang. Other destinations receiving a tourism makeover include Umiam Lake, Sohpetbneng Peak, Krang Suri Falls, Siju Caves, and the Nokrek Biosphere Reserve.
Lighting up Local Lives: Jobs Galore in Tourism
Tourism-led growth has become a cornerstone of Meghalaya’s development strategy, said Sonowal. In a series of forward-thinking state government initiatives, locals have been wowed with job opportunities at the grassroots level. Just this year, in amove to make tourism more accessible and responsible in the state, the government of Meghalaya birthed the "Tourist Buddies" initiative at four popular destinations - Shillong, Sohra (Cherrapunji), Dawki, and Mawlynnong.
While this move aims to create a seamless visitor experience and prioritize safety, it also marks a significant step in promoting responsible and community-driven tourism in the state. The initiative is the brainchild of the Department of Tourism, in partnership with the Meghalaya State Skill Development Society (MSSDS), and aims to train local youth in tourism-related jobs, offering them a professional edge.
