AI Giant OpenAI Strengthens Ties with India through 'Education Boosting Platform' for Educators and Students

OpenAI, the leading artificial intelligence (AI) research and deployment company, has unveiled an ambitious plan to revolutionise education in India. The US-based firm plans to distribute about half a million ChatGPT licenses to educators and students across the country over the next six months.

This initiative, called the 'OpenAI Learning Accelerator', is an India-first move aimed at empowering teachers and educators with AI tools. Raghav Gupta, appointed as Head of Education for India and Asia Pacific, will lead the efforts to expand access and work with institutions to transform education with AI.

The 'OpenAI Learning Accelerator' is part of the broader India's AI Action Summit 2026. The initiative aims to accelerate research, expand access, and provide training on AI in education across India.

In a significant collaboration, OpenAI has partnered with the Ministry of Education, AICTE, and ARISE schools to roll out this programme. IIT Madras, one of India's premier educational institutions, has also signed a research collaboration with OpenAI, backed by $500,000 in funding, to study how AI can improve learning outcomes and innovative teaching methods.

Leah Belsky, Vice President of Education at OpenAI, stated that this effort is one of OpenAI's most significant investments in India's education ecosystem to date. IIT Madras Director Dr. Kamakoti Veezhinathan and AICTE Chairman Prof. T.G. Sitharam welcomed the collaboration, expressing that it would strengthen India's AI-driven education ecosystem and prepare the next generation of students and educators.

OpenAI has also named Microsoft, Khan Academy, and MIT as partner institutions for the new AI-powered educational alliance. Microsoft and Khan Academy have been previously associated with OpenAI, while the MIT connection is newly emphasized.

To build AI literacy and confidence among teachers and learners, special training programmes will be rolled out. OpenAI has introduced a new "study mode" for ChatGPT, designed as a personalised tutor that guides students step by step with interactive responses and structured instruction.

India, with the largest student population using ChatGPT globally, is uniquely positioned to lead in AI-enabled education. Millions of Indian students already use ChatGPT for homework help, exam preparation, and exploring new ideas.

The launch of the 'OpenAI Learning Accelerator' coincides with OpenAI's broader expansion in India, including an upcoming New Delhi office, an India-specific ChatGPT Go subscription, enhanced Indic language support in GPT-5, and nationwide AI literacy programmes in partnership with the Ministry of Electronics and IT.

This move by OpenAI is a significant step towards integrating AI into India's educational system, potentially transforming the way students learn and teachers teach. As the demand for AI skills continues to grow, initiatives like the 'OpenAI Learning Accelerator' could play a crucial role in preparing India's workforce for the future.
